Mrs. Sharon Iorio
Dr. Sharon Hartin Iorio, Professor and Dean of the college,was appointed July 1, 2007. Prior to her appointment as dean, she served as an associate dean in the WSU Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Iorio graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BA in history. She completed an MS in mass communication and a Ph.D. in sociology both at Oklahoma State University.
Dr. Iorio came to WSU in 1990 as an assistant professor in the Elliott School of Communication. In 1999, she was appointed as Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences associate dean for curriculum development, faculty development and assessment. Dr. Iorio was promoted to the rank of Professor in 2004. She also was selected to attend the Harvard University Management Development Program in 2004.
As associate dean, Dr. Iorio was the College liaison to teacher education programs during preparation for the most recent National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education site visit and during the development of 13 new WSU teacher licensure programs approved by the Kansas State Board of Education in 2004.
During her career, Dr. Iorio has published one book, co-authored and edited a second book, and published more than 30 articles. She serves on the editorial board of a national academic journal and has received several awards for her research including a first-place award from the National Federation of Press Women for her co-authored, edited book, Taking it to the Streets: Qualitative Research in Journalism published by Lawrence Erlbaum and Associates, 2004.
She received a first-place award from the Kansas Federation of Press Women for her book, Faith’s Harvest: Mennonite Identity in Northwest Oklahoma, published by the University of Oklahoma Press, 1999.
Dr. Iorio has held national offices in her academic disciplinary association and in 2005 co-chaired the International Media Tenor symposium held in Lugano, Switzerland.
Since 2000, Dr. Iorio has spoken to two international conferences, nine national conferences, and more than 30 civic groups across Kansas on the topics of mass communication and education.
She is married to L. Richard Iorio, an attorney, and they have three adult sons.
